Using down ward strokes were the catheter tubing enters your body. This will prevent infection and the build up of encrustations around the catheter site. This should be done at least daily or twice daily.
Urine should be clear and have a light yellow color with a mild smell. If you’re supposed to keep track of your urine output, write down the amount, along with the current date and time. To help reduce the smell, fill the bag halfway with a mixture of 1 part white vinegar and 3 parts water. Shake the bag and let it sit for 15 minutes. You can clean your catheter while you’re in the shower.
Cleaning the Catheter
It’s held inside your bladder by a balloon filled with water. The parts of the catheter outside your body are shown in Figure 1. Proper catheter care is important to prevent infections that is costly to treat. You may switch from the night bag to the leg bag and vice-versa at a time that works well for you. Be sure to empty and clean the bags when not in use. Always wash your hands before and after touching the catheter and drainage bag.
External catheter – this type of catheter is often used for male patients with urinary incontinence rather than urinary retention. Foley catheter – this type of catheter remains in place for an extended period that could range from days to up to 12 weeks. It is held in place with a water-filled balloon inside the patient’s bladder. Foley catheter is typically inserted through the urethra.

You may find it useful to get more information and advice from support groups and other organisations. Indwelling catheters can be more problematic, but it's still usually possible to have sex with them in place. For example, men can fold the catheter along the base of their penis and cover them both with a condom. Intermittent catheters are usually designed to be used once and then thrown away.

Patient Appointments
Both leg and nighttime bags attach at the same point. The rubber or silicone portion should stay in your body. Having a catheter should not prevent you carrying out your normal activities. If you have any questions when you have read this booklet please ask your nurse prior to discharge from the hospital.
Your nurse will show you how to do this. Using mild soap and water, clean your genital area.If you have a penis, pull back your foreskin, if needed. Having a urinary catheter should not stop you from doing most of your usual activities. You'll be advised about when it's safe for you to go to work, exercise, go swimming, go on holidays, and have sex.

Squeeze the rubber tubing to prevent urine from leaking. To empty the bag, pull the tube downward from the plastic bracket. The kidneys produce urine, which passes down the ureters into the bladder where it is stored. Urine is expelled from the bladder through the urethra. Drink sufficient liquids to keep your urine flowing freely and prevent your catheter from becoming clogged. Secure the catheter with tape or a Dale™Foley Catheter Holder to the outer side of your thigh.
At night, you'll need to attach a larger bag. Your night bag should either be attached to your leg bag or to the catheter valve. It should be placed on a stand next to your bed, near the floor, to collect urine as you sleep. Single-use night bags are usually used to reduce the risk of infection.
The leg bag should not be worn at night because it can fill up quickly. Close the clamps on the bottom of the bag you are removing and the one you are putting on to prevent urine from draining out. Do not touch the end of the drainage spout. If touched, the spout should be cleaned with an alcohol pad.

Gently tap the connection to drain any urine left in the tube in down into the leg bag. Clean the connection between the catheter and the drainage bag with an alcohol swab. Use a hypoallergenic tape to secure the urinary bag on either side of your bed. When the bag is empty, close the clamp on the drain tube.
It is an extension of the catheter which can be removed and replaced by the caregiver. When changing the drainage bag, place an aseptic cloth or gauze piece under the connection point of the catheter. Tightly press on the catheter with your fingers and slowly disconnect the drainage bag.
However some patients with catheters experience problems with leakage of urine from around the catheter and this can be a long term problem. This may be caused by the bladder muscle overacting due to the presence of the catheter, which is a foreign body. This may be treated with medication to stop the bladder contracting.
